ABOUT NEHRU MEMORIAL HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, UMSNING 

 

              During the visit of the (Late) Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India, in the year 1957, the then Headman of Umsning (L) Shri. Sodren Lyngwa who was a far sighted, kind, humble and a visionary along with elders and children of the village came forward to greet the Prime Minister, in such an opportunity, he requested the then Prime Minister for a school in the area. (L) Bah Sodren, being the headman of the village donated a piece of land where the main Campus of the School stands today. Then, immediately after that a Lower Primary School named, “Nehru School” in honour of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was started with (L) Babu J. Siria Tham as the Head Teacher. Nehru School was then approved and supported by the Block Office till a proper school management was formed. Hence, on 2nd September 1961, the first School Management Committee comprising members from villages namely Umsning, Nongjri, Nongthymmai, Syad-Lyngdoh, Syad-Rit respectively and others was constituted and the school was up-graded to the Proceeding M.E. School with (L) D.D.Stone Lapang as the Head Teacher. Furthermore, the then Chief Minister of Assam Shri. B. P. Chaliha, laid the Foundation Stone for its upgradation on the 16th April 1966. Eventually in the process, the school was upgraded up to Class X (ten), i.e., High School with (L) Shri. D. W. Lapang, who resigned from a government job and took over as the full fledge Founder Headmaster of the School. After the demise of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, this school was renamed as Nehru Memorial High School.

              The school is a recognized Secondary School and has been under Deficit system of Grant-in-aid (from Classes VI to X) since the year 1985. The year 2015 has been another milestone in the school history where it has been up-graded to the Higher Secondary level (Arts) with Shri. Lewellyn Lapang as the In-charge Principal of the Higher Secondary Section. Besides, the school has an extended campus in Rtiang Village, Ribhoi District which Nehru Memorial H/S School took over Risoh English School, Rtiang on 27th October,2022 from Shri. D.D.Laloo & his associates and change its name to ‘Nehru Memorial Secondary School, Rtiang Campus’.

               Since its humble beginning in 1962 with a handful students and a few dedicated teachers who volunteered to serve this school, there has been no turning back. This school has fought through thick and thin and has grown by leaps and bounds. The school has become a beam of light that has brought not only literacy but real education to a large cluster of villages numbering about 100(one hundred) villages. It takes pride in having produced men and women of prominence who have played and have been playing vital roles in various capacities in the state in particular and country in general.
